Bosnian Cardinal Vinko Puljic poses for pictures near the statue of the late Pope John Paul II after it was unveiled in Sarajevo April 30, 2014. The statue of the late Pope John Paul II was erected in Sarajevo on Wednesday to honour the man who had permanently called for peace during the Bosnian war of the 1990s, just days after the Vatican proclaimed him as saint of the Roman Catholic Church. The citizens of Sarajevo fondly remember the pope who was among first to recognise the new Bosnian state after it proclaimed independence from the former Yugoslavia in 1992 and visited the destroyed capital soon after the war ended.
