Las obras de restauración de la tumba de Cristo, que se encuentra en muy mal estado, se iniciarán dentro de algunas semanas en la iglesia del Santo Sepulcro en Jerusalén, anunció el miércoles la Custodia de Tierra Santa.

Una estructura metálica sostiene desde hace decenas de años esta tumba, un pequeño edificio de mármol de varios metros de alto y ancho.

Esta estructura mantiene juntos los bloques de mármol que tienden a separarse, inicialmente como consecuencia del mal tiempo y ahora de la visita diaria de miles de peregrinos y turistas.
El pequeño edificio, que se encuentra bajo la cúpula de la iglesia, en la gruta en la que, según la tradición cristiana, se depositó el cuerpo de Cristo tras su muerte, se desarmará y volverá a construir exactamente igual, indicó en su portal de internet la Custodia, que tiene a su cargo los lugares santos católicos en Tierra Santa.
Las piezas demasiado frágiles o rotas se sustituirán por otras, se limpiarán las placas de mármol que se puedan conservar y se consolidará la estructura que las sostiene.
Un equipo griego tendrá a su cargo la restauración, la cual, se prevé, durará ocho meses y quedará terminada a principios de 2017. La tumba no se cerrará durante las obras.
El actual edificio, construido en 1809-1810 en estilo barroco otomano, tras un incendio que dañó a la basílica, es la más reciente de las construcciones que se han sucedido desde el siglo IV en ese lugar.
